Seras – formerly known as Esken Renewables – has successfully completed a £2.3 million upgrade to its biomass fuel production facility at Tilbury Green Power, one of the UK’s largest biomass power plants.
The comprehensive refurbishment of the waste wood processing plant incorporates cutting edge technology, supplied by HAAS Recycling-Systems. According to Seras, the upgrade has enhanced the facility’s operational performance across several key areas, including plant safety, efficiency and fuel quality. These improvements have helped to ensure an even more reliable 24/7 fuel supply to Tilbury Green Power. The month-long upgrade involved installing key technological equipment including a new dust suppression misting system which Seras says helps create a safe and sustainable environment and enhances the health and safety performance of the plant.
Tilbury Green Power in Essex generates up to 335 GWh of sustainable energy every year. Seras has an exclusive fuel supply contract with the power station, owned by Greenvolt Group and Equitix, through to 2036. The Tilbury plant, which converts untreated waste wood into sustainable wood chip, produces 300k tonnes of fuel for Tilbury Green Power every year.
Aaron Whitrow, Head of Site Operations at Seras, said: “This significant investment into the Tilbury processing plant underlines our commitment to fuel the UK’s sustainable energy future. Working in partnership with HAAS Recycling-Systems, we have developed the Tilbury facility into an industry leading waste wood plant, demonstrating the highest standards in safety, operational efficiency and sustainability.”
Sascha Kloft, Managing Director, HAAS Recycling-Systems, said: “Together with Seras, we have achieved significant progress by implementing extensive updates to the two high-performance wood recycling lines at the Tilbury fuel production depot. This project is among the most extensive refurbishments we have undertaken at HAAS, marking an important milestone in further enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the facilities.”
Seras was acquired by Pioneer Point Partners in December 2023 when the company was known as Esken Renewables. Under new ownership Seras have invested £13 million into a new fleet of modern vehicles, enhancing fuel production capabilities and increasing Seras’ supply of Megaskips, which was recently expanded into Yorkshire.
Seras has long-term contracts to supply 1.7 million tonnes of fuel to biomass plants each year. The renewable energy generated is equivalent to the annual domestic electricity needs of 2% of the UK population.
