ZoneSafe proximity warning technology is designed to make workplaces safer for everyone. The technology is manufactured by Avonwood Developments, where the team has over twenty years of experience in worksite safety and RFID technology and has developed a range of safety solutions designed to significantly reduce the risk of accidents between pedestrian workers, moving vehicles, and infrastructure.
Manufactured on the south coast in Dorset, ZoneSafe has grown from humble beginnings, fitting sensors to the back of dustbin lorries, to becoming a leader in worksite safety.
Although the UK remains its key priority, ZoneSafe is also exported to over twenty countries worldwide. It is also used in many different sectors, including waste and recycling, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, aviation, ports and terminals.
Creating Safer Worksites & Reducing Accident Risk
Ensuring the safety of people and vehicles on busy worksites can be challenging, especially when it’s difficult to separate pedestrian workers from moving machinery. Hazards such as blind corners, concealed entrances, obstructions, vehicle blind spots, and unpredictable behaviours all heighten the risk of accidents and collisions within the wood recycling industry.
Whether dealing with forklifts, load shovels, reach stackers, or excavators, ZoneSafe systems can be fitted onto any worksite vehicle. Each safety solution is modular, providing additional layers of safety or a complete site-wide safety solution.
From initial discussions through on-site demonstrations and installation to after-sales support and servicing, the team at ZoneSafe works with its customers to ensure their safety solution functions precisely as intended. Solutions can also be customised to meet specific needs.
ZoneSafe explains that its proximity warning systems enhance situational awareness for both vehicle drivers and pedestrian workers by alerting them to each other’s presence even when they can’t be seen.
The company adds: “Using RFID (radio frequency identification) technology, both vehicle drivers and pedestrian workers can be detected from behind piles of timber, racking, or even walls. In-cab warnings from the control unit warn the driver in plenty of time when people are detected in close proximity, and vibration alerts from tags worn by pedestrians ensure they are warned of any approaching vehicles.
“Additionally, if you’re unable to provide tags to pedestrian workers (or the general public), then our vehicle-activated signs alert everyone in a designated area to the dangers of approaching vehicles. When the vehicle is detected, the lights flash giving plenty of warning. When the vehicle has moved away, the sign stops flashing. Simple yet effective, our active signage range improves the safety of your worksite and complements each proximity warning system.”

ZoneSafe Solutions
ZoneSafe Vehicle-to-Person Alert
- Provides complete 360-degree detection around each vehicle.
- Detects pedestrian workers even when they can’t be seen behind racking, walls, or other obstructions such as timber.
- The detection range can be adjusted from three to ten meters away from the vehicle in every direction.
- Drivers receive audible and visual alerts through the in-cab control unit when a pedestrian worker is detected.
- Workers are notified of approaching vehicles via tags that vibrate strongly enough to be felt even through thick padded jackets.
- Detection range is easily adjusted via the ZoneSafe app on your phone or another web-enabled device.
ZoneSafe Vehicle-to-Vehicle Alert
- Long-range line-of-sight detection detects other worksite vehicles up to fifty metres away.
- The in-cab control unit provides two types of warnings: an early warning vehicle detection alert and a close proximity vehicle detection alert. Each alert has a different sound to differentiate between each warning.
- Detection distance can be customized to meet specific needs via the ZoneSafe app.
ZoneSafe Sensor-Activated Warning Signs
- Strategically placed throughout the worksite, vehicle-activated warning signs enhance pedestrian awareness of approaching vehicles.
- Each sign flashes to warn the workforce (and/or the general public) of the approaching vehicle.
- The sign only flashes when a vehicle is present.
- Additional options include floor projection warning signs, traffic light systems, access control via barriers and roller/shutter doors, and sensor-activated beacons.
ZoneSafe Data Insight Analytics
- Myzonesafe helps users to understand, analyse, and improve safety across a worksite.
- Data from the in-cab control unit is downloaded from the cloud, providing easy access to information such as:
- Event analysis and comparison
- Trend and pattern identification
- Vehicle movement tracking and near-miss occurrences
- Safety performance management
- Custom report generation and data sharing
- Event analysis and comparison
